FAQ

Welcome to SKYY Vodka FAQ. Here, you’ll find the top answers to the Internet’s most asked questions about us.

Most asked questions

How did SKYY Vodka redefine vodka?

With our launch in San Francisco in 1992, SKYY redefined vodka as one of the early pioneers of a state-of-the-art quadruple-distilled, triple filtration production process that yields a clean and smooth tasting vodka.

Who are SKYY Vodka’s collective of experts?

SKYY believes that when we do things together, we go further. This mindset inspired us to bring together a diverse group of experts with complementary expertise, including a water sommelier, a chemist and an expert bartender. Each expert brought their experience and unique point of view, and together, they discovered the distinctive superiority that minerals used in the water could bring to vodka. In the process, more than 35 liquid samples were created and evaluated. In the end, our collective of experts created a high quality vodka that is made with water enhanced by minerals, including Pacific minerals from the San Francisco Bay Area, and is filtered through California Limestone, offering the perfect base for a better tasting vodka & soda.

Does the new SKYY Vodka taste different?

SKYY Vodka is now made with water enhanced by minerals, including Pacific minerals from the San Francisco Bay Area, and the distillate is filtered through California Limestone. These natural elements were added to our original award-winning liquid yielding a nose that is fresh and clean, with a hint of fruit and toasted grain, coupled with a clean, smooth, mineral taste on the palate.

What makes SKYY Vodka taste smooth?

Our proprietary distillation requirements result in SKYY Grade quality. This distillation process extracts congeners to a level barely noticeable in a sensory lab test, even with the most sensitive testing equipment. The result is a fresh and smooth vodka.

What are the minerals and where do they come from?

Sodium, calcium, and magnesium are harvested from the San Francisco Bay Area. Potassium and additional calcium are added to the water used to make our liquid, as well.

At what stage of the process are the minerals used?

In addition to being quadruple-distilled and triple-filtered, SKYY’s award-winning distillate is diluted with water enhanced with minerals, including Pacific minerals sourced from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Do the SKYY Infusions also have minerals?

Yes. SKYY Infusions are made from the same alcohol base as our core liquid, with real fruit as well as flavors using only natural aromas, extracts, essences and/or juices.

Is SKYY Vodka gluten free?

Yes. The product is gluten free.

Are there any changes to the grain base in SKYY Vodka?

No, the grains used to produce our award winning liquid have not changed.

Is SKYY Vodka made in San Francisco?

While our vodka is no longer produced in San Francisco, we consider San Francisco our home. It was the inspiration and muse for our brand refresh as we evolved our award-winning liquid with a character adding twist. It was the spirit of our “hometown” that inspired us to use water enhanced minerals, including Pacific minerals sourced from the San Francisco Bay Area, and filtering our distillate through California Limestone.

What changes were made to the packaging?

SKYY’s refreshed packaging design is inspired by San Francisco’s natural character. The new bottle is a modern take on the iconic brand and features a sophisticated, sleek and minimalistic style with a lighter, more natural blue tone. It also features ripples and ridges that reflect the waves of the Pacific Ocean, and a restyled white logo.

Why does my vodka freeze?

It is a fact that 80 proof vodka freezes at a temperature of -24ºC (-11.2ºF). If your freezer gets that cold, it is possible that your SKYY vodka may freeze. However, this will not compromise the quality of SKYY’s award-winning liquid. We suggest gently shaking the bottle before serving your cocktail.

Why are there flakes in my SKYY Vodka?

What may look like white flakes or sediment in your bottle of SKYY are actually calcium minerals that have crystalized due to a naturally occurring phenomenon. While the appearance of these crystals might seem unusual, they have no significant impact on taste and pose no health or safety risk. SKYY Vodka is made with water enhanced by Pacific Minerals, including dissolved calcium, resulting in a subtle salinity and minerality. When the liquid has been exposed to a wide array of temperature changes, some minerals (especially calcium) may crystalize. For example, if bottles are put in cold or freezing temperatures and then warmed again, there is a possibility of this crystallization occurring. This could occur when bottles leave the facility and are in transit. This naturally occurring phenomenon may not be immediate and, in most bottles, it does not show up at all. We take great pride in the high quality of SKYY Vodka and it’s important to us that our customers always have a positive experience with our range of award-winning products. If you have one of these bottles with crystals and it impacts your satisfaction, please email us at SKYY@custhelp.com and include a photo of the product, so we can help.

How is SKYY Vodka best enjoyed?

SKYY Vodka is designed to add character to any cocktail experience and its smooth clean taste on the palate makes for a better vodka & soda. Try it with soda water and a grapefruit twist, SKYY’s signature pour, and with friends, of course.

What is the benefit of adding a grapefruit garnish to a SKYY & Soda?

The subtle salinity in the mineralized water component of SKYY Vodka is intended to enhance the citric flavors of the essential oils in the grapefruit peel, while counterbalancing the bitterness. The overall result is a smooth, fresh tasting cocktail.

How do the minerals interact with soda to create a better tasting SKYY & Soda?

The mineralized water used to create SKYY Vodka is intended to enhance body, mouthfeel and minerality of a SKYY & Soda. The Pacific minerals add a subtle salinity and minerality that we believe reduce bitterness and enhance the inherent sweetness and flavor of some cocktail ingredients, including grapefruit. The potassium and calcium components of our other minerals are intended to add structure and fresh taste to any cocktail.
